Dr. Ashmita Banik: Pioneering Pathways in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Research

Dr. Ashmita Banik: A Rising Force in Clinical Microbiology and Medical Research In the ever-evolving landscape of global healthcare, professionals like Dr. Ashmita Banik stand as beacons of innovation, dedication, and scientific rigor. With a strong academic foundation and an unwavering commitment to advancing medical science, Dr. Banik is steadily leaving an indelible mark in the field of clinical microbiology. After earning her MBBS degree from Tripura University in 2016, Dr. Banik further specialized in Clinical Microbiology, completing her MD in 2022 from the same institution. Currently serving as a Senior Resident in the Department of Microbiology at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh, she actively engages in both clinical diagnostics and cutting-edge research. Her work spans bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and mycobacteriology—disciplines that are critical in diagnosing and managing infectious diseases. Dr. Banik’s curiosity and passion for microbes drive her to explore the intricacies of disease manifestation in the human body. She is particularly interested in neglected tropical diseases and emerging pathogens—areas that often receive insufficient attention in mainstream medical research. Her early experiences during her post-graduate training revealed a rare case of chronic hookworm infection (Ankylostoma duodenale) in an elderly farmer, highlighting the ongoing challenges of diseases once thought to be eradicated. This case not only emphasized the importance of vigilance in clinical diagnosis but also set the tone for her investigative and scholarly approach. One of her notable contributions is in the field of tuberculosis research. While working in a TB laboratory, she observed that many non-tubercular mycobacterial (NTM) infections were being misdiagnosed and treated as tuberculosis, leading to prolonged suffering and incorrect treatment. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, Dr. Banik presented her findings at TRIMACON 2021 under the aegis of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), where she received accolades for her insightful contribution. Her research on extrapulmonary and pediatric tuberculosis in the northeastern state of Tripura adds valuable data to a region that often remains underrepresented in medical literature. She also explored the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of various pathogens in a tertiary care center in Arunachal Pradesh, contributing to a better understanding of antibiotic resistance—a growing global health threat. Dr. Banik’s work has not gone unnoticed. Her study on the rpoB gene mutation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis led to her receiving the prestigious International Best Researcher Award at IIRAC 2024. Her continued excellence in virology was recognized when she was honored with the Young Achiever Award 2024 for her comprehensive research on monkeypox, a disease that has seen a resurgence in the post-COVID era. Her publication on monkeypox morphology and clinical patterns was well received by the international medical community, helping to guide further research and clinical preparedness. In addition to her clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Banik plays an active role in the academic publishing landscape. She has authored multiple articles in reputed journals, including the Scholars Journal of Medical Case Report, International Journal of Advance Research, Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology, and the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. Her dedication to scientific communication extends to her role as a peer reviewer for several international journals, including those under the Springer Nature group and various Asian medical journals. This speaks volumes about her expertise and her commitment to maintaining the quality and integrity of medical literature. Dr. Banik’s contributions have earned her the Early Career Researcher of the Year award at the Asian Excellence Awards 2024. Her membership in the Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology further underscores her involvement in specialized fields of medicine. Through all her accomplishments, what stands out most is Dr. Banik’s intrinsic motivation to serve. Whether it’s diagnosing a rare infection, advocating for the correct treatment protocols, or bringing overlooked pathogens into scientific focus, her work consistently aims to improve patient care and community health outcomes. Her journey reflects a blend of clinical excellence, academic rigor, and a passion for discovery—qualities that not only define her career but also inspire peers and young researchers alike. As she continues to push the boundaries of what’s known and possible in microbiology, Dr. Ashmita Banik represents the future of infectious disease research in India and beyond
