From Village Roots to National Recognition: The Journey of Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Best Orthopaedic Surgeon of 2025

Born in the small village of Tulsipur in Auraiya district, Dr. S began life in humble surroundings, shaped by resilience, simplicity, and frequent challenges. His father served in the UP Police, a transferable job that kept the family moving across towns, while his mother managed the household and cared for him, his younger brother, and sister. A pivotal moment in his childhood came when his mother contracted chest tuberculosis. With no easy access to medical information or specialists, the family relied solely on word of mouth. A taxing full-day train journey to Gwalior led them to a doctor who successfully treated her, igniting in him a desire to pursue medicine and dedicate his life to healing others.

His early education was fragmented due to his father’s frequent transfers, taking him from a government primary school near Kalkan Devi Mandir in Sangrampur, Sultanpur, to schools in Jagdishpur, Haidargarh, and Chandausi in Moradabad. From class six to twelve, he studied in Chandausi before moving to Kanpur in 2001. Initially enrolling in DAV College for a B.Sc., he soon realized his passion lay elsewhere and dropped out to prepare for medical entrance exams. Despite struggling with physics, he persisted and secured admission in 2006 to MBBS at LLRM Medical College, Meerut.

Even during medical school, personal challenges shaped his career path. While pursuing MBBS (2006–2011), his father required surgery for a leg fracture, and his mother developed arthritis. These experiences deepened his interest in orthopaedics, a field focused on restoring mobility and improving quality of life. After completing MBBS, he pursued an MS in Orthopaedics at MLB Medical College, Jhansi (2012–2015). During this time, he suffered a serious ACL and meniscus injury in a motorcycle accident. A subsequent surgery in Nagpur failed due to infection, leaving him temporarily immobilized. Through patience, self-discipline, and motivation from inspiring stories of resilience, he gradually recovered without additional surgery, emerging stronger and more determined.

Dr. S’s professional journey took him to Max Hospital, Saket, New Delhi, as a Senior Resident, where he honed his surgical skills. He further specialized through a fellowship in Ilizarov techniques and earned a FIFA Diploma in Sports Medicine, enabling him to manage complex fractures, sports injuries, and advanced joint procedures. In November 2016, he joined Rama Medical College, Kanpur, as an Assistant Professor in Orthopaedics and rose to become Professor and Head of Department through dedication and perseverance.

Alongside his academic role, he co-founded Krishna Clinic in Kanpur with his post-graduate colleague, Dr. Archana, and operates at Kolumbia Hospital, handling major orthopaedic surgeries. Over his career, he has performed more than 10,000 surgeries, from fracture repairs to joint replacements and arthroscopies, while mentoring young doctors in both hospital and academic settings.

His contributions have earned recognition from Dainik Jagran, Radio City, and numerous national conferences. In 2025, he was honored as the Best Orthopaedic Surgeon of the Year, an award presented by Saina Nehwal. Beyond accolades, he values his family deeply; his parents now reside with him in Kanpur, a fulfillment after years of sacrifices for his education.

Reflecting on his journey from a small village schoolboy to a nationally recognized surgeon, he emphasizes that struggles are not barriers but stepping stones. Personal hardships, his mother’s illness, and his own injury shaped his empathy and resilience, lessons he carries into every patient interaction. He believes that while surgery heals bones, compassion heals lives—a principle guiding him daily in teaching, consulting, and operating, and inspiring the next generation of medical professionals.
