“Dr. Rajasekaran Samykan: Pioneering Biotechnology and Empowering Rural India”

Building the Future of Biotechnology and Rural Development

Innovation often begins close to home, rooted in the land that shapes one’s identity and vision. For entrepreneurs willing to navigate uncertainty to strengthen India’s position as a global leader, their journeys deserve both recognition and respect. Among them is Dr. Rajasekaran Samykan, a first-generation entrepreneur from Erode, Tamil Nadu, whose transformation from a corporate banker to a biotechnology pioneer is as inspiring as it is impactful.

As the Founder and CEO of Algaven PhytoBiotech Innovations (a unit of JE JE Enterprises Pvt. Ltd.), he has channelled over 17 years of corporate banking experience into developing products derived from algae, natural extracts, and agricultural waste. His mission is not merely commercial—it is rooted in empowering rural communities, creating sustainable livelihoods, and promoting entrepreneurship in regions often overlooked by mainstream industry.

His commitment to rural development was shaped by an early observation: farmers were not receiving fair market valuations for their produce, leading to minimal sales and widespread economic hardship. Determined to bridge this gap, he established Algaven PhytoBiotech with the aim of building scalable business models in areas such as spirulina farming, nutraceutical production, botanical art, and waste-to-wealth innovations. Each initiative is designed to strengthen local economies while promoting environmental sustainability.

With an academic background in botany and an Honorary Doctorate in Entrepreneurship and Innovations, he had long been drawn to biotechnology and life sciences. Leaving behind the security of a banking career, he began his entrepreneurial journey from scratch. In the early days, he worked late nights after his regular job, conducting experiments with spirulina, natural extracts, and food powders in a modest rented space equipped with only basic tools. He recalls personally delivering his first spirulina order—a small sale, but one that laid the groundwork for Algaven’s growth and long-term vision.

Like many entrepreneurs, he faced significant challenges. Securing funding required building trust with a limited pool of investors, while engaging farmers and rural communities demanded patience, transparency, and persistence. Over time, his dedication paid off—Algaven’s products have gained global relevance, and his work has positioned him as both an innovator and a mentor in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Under his leadership, Algaven PhytoBiotech has become a pioneer in biotechnology, with a diversified portfolio that includes spirulina farming and value addition for nutraceuticals, animal feed, and cosmeceuticals; natural food powders and herbal extracts such as garlic, onion, banana, curry leaves, and mint; phycocyanin (blue spirulina) production, a high-value natural colorant and antioxidant; waste-to-wealth products such as eggshell powder, mango seed oil, and orange peel extracts; and Botanique Frames—India’s first commercial botanical frame concept blending art, science, and entrepreneurship.

Beyond his own ventures, he is deeply committed to mentoring emerging entrepreneurs. His guidance has helped launch and grow businesses like Ms. Hepzhiba’s Ledgify in the accounting and business services sector, Ms. Beula’s Earnify—an empowerment platform for women and youth in sales—and Mrs. Suma K’s Sumaa Nutri Agro, which benefited from complete business setup and market linkage support.

Looking ahead, his vision remains ambitious and deeply rooted in social impact: “My goal is to empower over 100 women entrepreneurs, farmers, and rural youth by developing sustainable agricultural models, promoting value-added farming, and creating biotechnology-based enterprises that generate enduring livelihoods.”

In a sector where innovation often prioritizes profit over purpose, his approach stands out for its balance of scientific advancement, economic empowerment, and environmental stewardship. By turning challenges into opportunities and blending biotechnology with grassroots development, he is not only shaping the future of rural India but also redefining what it means to be an entrepreneur in the modern age.
